As everyone in the hobby has recently heard, PSA is a little busy. On March 1st they announced that they were basically doubling all prices at all levels. The reasoning behind this was to hopefully slow down the submission of cards to allow them to catch up on their backlog at the time of over 7 million cards.
What PSA did not expect was that this price hike changed NOTHING as millions of submissions continued to come in at the new higher cost. Two weeks ago PSA announced that they were suspending ALL services besides Super Express ($300 per card) and Walk-Through's ($600 per card) to give them the ability to catch up on their now rumored backlog of over 10 MILLION CARDS.
So what was the point of this entire rant? How does this effect what we are buying? One of the most important tools that buyers in the hobby utilize are PSA's population report which shows how many of each card are graded, and at what score. This would show the graded scarcity of the card through PSA, although there may be other graded cards through BGS, SGC, and other grading companies. With this tremendous backlog we truly don't know what to expect once this 10+ million card back log catches up.
Still not entirely sure what the hell I'm talking about? Lets say you have a 2019 Panini Prizm Zion Williamson Orange Ice PSA 10. Today there are only 324 of these cards on the PSA population report. Once PSA catches up this number could jump to tens of thousands. There are only one type of cards that are safe from this PSA backlog and that is:
NUMBERED, SHORT PRINT & SSP CARDS
Buying cards where we know there were limited prints of is the only way until this PSA mess is caught up to know true value.
